In an era of housing crises, environmental unsustainability and social fragmentation, the need for more sociable, affordable and sustainable housing is vital. The answer? Shared living - from joint households to land-sharing, cohousing and ecovillages. Using successful examples from a range of countries, Anitra Nelson shows how 'eco-collaborative housing' - resident-driven low impact living with shared facilities and activities - can address the great social, economic and sustainability challenges that householders and capitalist societies face today. Sharing living spaces and facilities results in householders having more amenities and opportunities for neighbourly interaction. Small is Necessary places contemporary models of 'alternative' housing and living at centre stage arguing that they are outward-looking, culturally rich, with low ecological footprints and offer governance techniques for a more equitable and sustainable future

This has involved building and testing a 3D tool for Community Collaborative decisionmaking in the Jewell Station Neighbourhood (JSN). The focus of this decision-making tool provision is placed in an urban planning context. VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) was used to build two tools: a ‘Sandbox ’ and a virtual world. Building the tools was done so that community members, or planning consortia, could use the tools in a group meeting or individually through home Internet computers, or even at Internet cafes.     Literary Communities: writers\u27 practices and networks

    This paper discusses a new direction for research on creative writing: exploring the formative contexts within which writers develop, receive recognition and are celebrated, our approach centres on literary networks and activities that characterize well-recognised literary communities. By studying the UNESCO Cities of Literature network, our research aims to identify and analyse key formative experiences for contemporary creative writers, although in this paper we simply refer to one of those cities — Melbourne. We hypothesize that the notion of a ‘community of practice’ has potential to be a constructive way to interrogate writers’ practices within literary communities to inform arts policy making and university creative writing programs. In this discussion we try to show how our approach promises to deliver a variety of findings, such as showing the practical links between creative writing and literary studies, as well as between creative writing processes and products

    Productive Creative Writers\u27 Relationships: A Communities-of-Practice Framework

    The notion of a \u27community of practice\u27 offers fruitful ways to frame and assess literary activities for the producers of literature, creative writers. Referring to Woody Allen\u27s film Midnight in Paris (2011), the experiences of two Australian writers and the Australian Seven Writers\u27 community of practice, we discuss gaps that our research approach aims to fill through investigating the significance of specific writers\u27 literary relationships in developing their creative writing skills and work. Framing such relationships as professional \u27communities of practice\u27, we argue that studying the functions of contemporary writers\u27 relationships as working environments has the potential to inform both creative writing learning and arts policymaking.
